How's this for party unity?
Pottstown Area GOP leader Jim Vlahos has dropped out of the race for Montgomery County Republican Party chairman, clearing the way for Lansdale attorney Robert Kerns to take over the troubled party on May 8.
News of Vlahos' decision comes from Margaret Gibbons, who covers Montgomery County politics and government for the Journal Register Co. newspaper chain.
Already endorsed by most county GOP officials and better-known, Kerns was expected to succeed current Chairman Ken Davis.
Vlahos' departure will avoid a nasty fight at the party's annual convention. Finally, somebody does something for the good of the party in Montco. You made the right decision, Mr. Vlahos.
(Vlahos is mailing a letter today to all Montco GOP Committee members announcing his withdrawal from the chairman's race and endorsing Kerns in the interest of party unity.)
A full story will appear in Friday's editions of The Mercury and The Times-Herald.
