Lots of interesting statistics released today by the U.S. Census Bureau:

The white population in the United States continued to be the largest race group in the nation, representing 75 percent of the total population, but grew at a slower rate than the total population.

Other highlights:

Only 16% Return Census Forms So Far

Despite the media blitz, the letter telling you the form is coming, the form itself and the post card reminding you to send back the form, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that only 16 percent of American households have participated so far in the 2010 Census.

What could be the problem? Could it be mistrust of the federal government? Just a guess.

One week after U.S. census forms were mailed to 120 million households, about 16 percent of the nation has completed those forms and sent them back. That number puts the government on its way to matching or surpassing mail participation rates in 2000 of 72 percent, the Census Bureau said Wednesday.

The bureau will continue to accept mailed-in forms through most of April.

From May until July, it will send census-takers to each home that doesn't reply by mail, which is more costly and sometimes leads to more inaccurate responses. The Census Bureau has estimated it would save $1.5 billion in follow-up visits if everyone who receives a census form mails it back.

PA enlists Franco Harris, Ana Ortiz to help publicize 2010 Census

Gov. Ed Rendell has named Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris and actress Ana Ortiz of television's "Ugly Betty" to co-chair an advisory panel to ensure compliance with the 2010 Census.

"Each year, more than $400 billion in federal funds are allocated based in all or in part on the results of the Census," Rendell said. "That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period for critical things like schools, senior centers, job training centers, bridges, highways, public transit, and local emergency response services and training – a larger amount than many people realize."

Rendell said Pennsylvania cannot afford for any resident to skip participating in the Census, which involves answering only 10 questions and takes just 10 minutes to complete.

"According to the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, Pennsylvania's population in the 2000 Census was undercounted by 102,000 peoplem," Rendell said. "That's the equivalent of missing the cities of Altoona and Lancaster combined, or failing to count the entire city of Erie. We cannot let that happen again; there is too much at stake."

Politicizing the 2010 Census

I like this Letter to the Editor originally published in The Pottstown Mercury from a Chester County resident who is concerned about how the Obama Administration is planning to conduct the 2010 Census.

Why is the Census counting illegals within the U.S.?

Are you aware that undocumented aliens will be included in the 2010 census? The primary beneficiaries of this "count" will be border states whose seats in Congress and shares of federal grants will increase. Pennsylvania is likely to come out the poorer. For these reasons and so many others, yet another hot button issue is heading our way. Should undocumented aliens be afforded a 'path to citizenship'?

What advocates of the citizenship option fail to appreciate is that we are a nation of laws. If that is ever forgotten, we become the less for it.

Rather than a path to citizenship, the debate must be refocused on a path to guest worker status. As a cattle ranch manager in Canada, I learned that it was common to supplement labor shortages through the Canadian guest worker program. Upon completion of employment contracts, guest workers returned to their countries of origin. It was a win/win proposition for all parties from many perspectives.

The question then becomes one of how we get to a controlled guest worker system from where we are now. Obvious elements would include enhanced border security, universal adoption of the E-verify program and crippling penalties for all who would subvert the lawful immigration process. Resident undocumented and document-expired aliens should be given one opportunity to come in from the shadows and be registered as temporary contracted guest workers. This would require a mechanism of sufficient scale, funded by guest worker employers, to manage the registration of millions within a predetermined timetable.

Given the inability of our government to efficiently process "clunker" rebates, it would be necessary to contract this short-lived program out to more capable private sector interests with albeit, federal oversight. Concurrently, a mirror image and successor to the temporary U.S. model for large scale guest worker contracting would be established outside our borders in a multitude of venues.

With a natural population growth rate of barely 1 percent, a robust and well-reasoned immigration policy is necessary to sustain our domestic economy. The violation of our immigration laws and disregard for our institutions however, must never be co-mingled with a path to citizenship. Such advocacy is not just un-American, it is anti-American. Elected officials who fail to grasp this point should be welcomed back to the private sector post haste.

Will ACORN conduct 2010 Census?

House Republican Leader John Boehner today issued the following statement on the public hearing of Robert Groves to be the Director of the Census before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs:

The Census is a constitutional exercise that is fundamental to our democracy and must not be influenced by partisan politics. I appreciate Mr. Groves' opening comments and his responses to direct questions to commit, under oath, that statistical sampling and statistical adjustment will not be a part of the 2010 Census nor will such practices be a part of the 2020 Census. However, our concerns about the Census potentially being tainted by political influence remain, and if Mr. Groves is confirmed, I look forward to regular reports from him to illustrate that the Census is free of partisan interference and manipulation.

I am also greatly concerned that the Census would enter into a national partnership with ACORN, an organization rife with internal corruption and that was responsible for multiple instances of vote fraud in the 2008 presidential election. Asking an organization like ACORN to help recruit the 1.4 million temporary workers that will go door-to-door is akin to inviting the fox into the henhouse. Corrupt organizations like ACORN should have no part in this process and, if Mr. Groves is confirmed, he should sever all ties between the Census and ACORN and its affiliated organizations.

The Obama Administration is turning to ACORN, the radical group responsible for injecting voter fraud into the 2008 election, to help out with conducting the 2010 Census.

What can possibly go wrong?

Plenty, according to Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Rob Gleason, who issued the following statement:

"ACORN's actions last year certainly did little to earn the public's trust and I am sure that most Americans are concerned about this group's ability to deliver an accurate count," Gleason said. "News first broke that the President wanted to move the U.S. census into the White House, now he is enlisting the help of ACORN, a group that is widely believed to be consistently breaking the law. President Obama is trying to interject politics into the 2010 U.S. census, hoping to increase the reach of his Party throughout the country. It will be tough to trust ACORN's counts or any data they submit.

"With the economy in decline it is sad to see that the President is so concerned about the 2010 census. I also find it even more troubling that the Census Bureau wouldn't be willing to offer these jobs to the many hard-working men and women already looking for a job, rather than do political favors for groups that helped elect our current president."

Newspaper: Obama corrupts the Constitution

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is not happy with the Obama Administration's attempts to politicize the Census Bureau.

From an editorial in today's edition:

If political hacks control the census, it will corrupt its integrity. That could skew the number of congressmen from the respective states and therefore the Electoral College, and allow the Obama administration to spread around the wealth based on pumped-up demographic data.

It could be another in a series of coupes de grace for our republic. Don't let it happen.
