Ironic: Teacher pension funds invested in gun makers

Interesting that the people who supervise investments for the nation's massive teacher unions did not have a problem investing in gun manufacturers before the school massacre in Connecticut. Now they're scrambling to divest their portfolios.

From The Associated Press:
For years, the gun industry has been a reliable investment, attracting tens of millions of dollars from some of the nation’s largest retirement funds. The firearms business has been strong, driven by relaxed laws for carrying concealed handguns and by buyers who feared that tighter gun restrictions were more likely under President Obama.

But after the bloodbath in Connecticut, the practice is under review in at least four states, including two of the most populous, California and New York.
I guess as long as the pension funds were returning a solid profit, it didn't matter where the money was placed? What say you liberals?

Berks County Commissioners: Amend PA Prevailing Wage Law

Taxpayers would benefit tremendously if Pennsylvania amended a Prevailing Wage Act that forces local and county government to pay high union wages for public projects, often sending work to out-of-area firms.

"House Bill 1329 would allow county dollars to be used more effectively for these projects, as well as, reduce the pressure on local property tax dollars. We encourage our state representatives to vote yes on House Bill 1329," according to all three Berks County commissioners, including the board's lone Democrat.

Union Boss Opposes Sale of PA Liquor Stores

Does the fact that Wendell W. Young IV makes a very comfortable salary as president of the union representing the liquor store clerk in Pennsylvania have anything to do with his opposition to the privatization of the stores?

Ending the government monopoly would raise $1.6 billion in new revenues for Pennsylvania and provide consumers with better hours, more locations and lower prices.

But it would result in a pay cut for union bosses like Mr. Young.

Columnist Obama's appease and entitle strategy is killing jobs

George F. Will does a nice job of summing up the failed Obama administration so far:

President Obama is sacrificing economic growth and job creation in order to placate organized labor. And as the crisis of the welfare state deepens, he is trying to enlarge the entitlement system and exacerbate the entitlement mentality.

A government borrowing $58,000 a second cannot afford Obama's policy of Stimulus Forever, and there is this problem with TAA at any level: It is unjust to treat some workers as more entitled than others to protection from the vicissitudes of economic dynamism.

Poll: 72% Say Taxpayers Not Getting Their Money’s Worth from Public Schools

So much for throwing more money at the problem, which is what Democrats and their Big Labor allies always suggest as way to fix the broken public education system in the United States.

The vast majority of Americans disagree.

From a new Rasmussen poll:
Voters overwhelmingly believe that taxpayers are not getting a good return on what they spend on public education, and just one-in-three voters think spending more will make a difference.

Newspaper: Big Labor's threat

It's us agains them - taxpayers vs. public sector unions - and the Big Labor will stop at nothing to continue fleecing taxpayers.

From an editorial in The Pittsburgh Tritube-Review:
Big Labor's incessant bellyaching over having to give up anything -- while cash-strapped state governments have nothing left to give -- has reached a retching new low: a threat from a Michigan union honcho to weaponize government jobs.

Big Labor is killing U.S. jobs

Unions collected over $8.8 billion in dues last year. Most of it went to union bosses and Democratic politicians instead of helping workers.

Look for the union label

If unions no longer work to improve the lives of their members, why do they exist?

Ann Coulter has the answer:
Ann Coulter on the vicious cycle: "The high salaries and magnificent benefits paid to government employees are used to fund the public sector unions, which then funnel a portion of that money back to the Democrats, who vote for the pay packages of government workers. The unions function as a pass-through from the taxpayers straight to Democrats running for re-election."

Newspaper: Some PA teachers earn $100,000 a year

Teachers in Pennsylvania can make $100,000 after 15 years in the classroom. (And that's working nine months out of the year).

Keep that in mind next time some union-fanatic says how tough it is in the public sector.

Newspaper questions 'benefit envy' in public sector

From a recent editorial in The Pottstown Mercury:
THORNS to public employees — and that includes teachers and police — who continue to think they are deserving of the generous benefit packages they get on the taxpayers' dime. The "benefit envy" generated by public employee perquisites is at the heart of the protests in Wisconsin and discontent throughout the nation. The Associated Press characterizes the divide as a national issue that has "set off resentment in a time when economic doldrums have left practically everyone tightening their belts." Health-care packages in particular remain at the heart of stalled public employee contract negotiations, as employees argue against benefit reductions that if accepted would still leave them with plans superior to those in the private sector. The costs and promise in public employee pensions are among the factors driving fiscal crises in state and municipal governments. And the situation is certain to get worse before it gets better in the wake of Gov Tom Corbett's budget proposal that puts a funding squeeze on local school districts and municipalities. Local taxpayers are not going to welcome a tax hike if they see teachers and other public employees with better benefit plans than the private sector. No one is winning this battle; something has to give.
