The most anticipated film of the year, at least for me and my sons, is opening today in 1,300 theaters across the country.
"The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" is a computer-animated comedy from BigIdea.com, the folks who created the VeggieTales video series. My boys have been fans of VeggieTales since they were 2 and 4 and loved the first VeggieTales feature release, 2002's "Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie," which grossed $25 million at the box office.
"Jonah" also bankrupted BigIdea.com because founder Phil Vischer insisted on financing the film without any outside investors. While it was a success at the box office and on DVD, the expense of making and marketing the film sank the company.
Vischer was forced to sell, but the new owners have continued the tradition of excellence that Vischer established. They're also a little more business-savvy than Vischer. "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" is being releases by Universal Studios.
Find out more about "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" at the film's official Web site.
And if you're not familiar with VeggieTales, it is wholesome family entertainment. There's about 30 videos in the series. I've watched them all, many times, and I'm still a VeggieTales fan.
