Newspaper calls Arlen Specter a hypocrite

Did Arlen Specter cheat his way to re-election in 2004?

That's the conclusion of an editorial in today's edition of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

A Federal Election Commission audit says Specter's campaign collected more than $1 million in excessive contributions, failed to properly disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars in receipts from political party and political action committees and missed a key reporting deadline before that year's primary, according to the newspaper.

Toomey lost the race by 2 percentage points. "Rational people argue Toomey would have defeated Specter had the rules not been eviscerated," the newspaper concludes.

Specter has already announced plans to seek re-election in 2010. Toomey, president of The Club for Growth, may get another shot at Specter.
