Little room for compromise between Rendell, GOP in 2008

Tom Barnes of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has an interesting story today contrasting the rival agendas of the Democrats and Republicans in Pennsylvania.

Lame duck Gov. Ed Rendell, who struck out with his 2007 agenda, will prod the Legislature with the same goals (energy subsidies, health insurance for everyone, etc.) in 2008, but he's an entire year away from his re-election victory and a year closer to leaving office. The sands of time are running out for Rendell.

Barnes gives some good play to the GOP agenda, which includes a cut in the state income tax that Rendell increased in 2003 with the help of both Democrats and Republicans in the state Legislature. The state is now sitting on a healthy surplus (over-taxation) and the Republicans want to give some of that money back to Pennsylvania residents.) Rendell, on the other hand, would rather spend the money.
