That didn't take long.
Two weeks after announcing he was thinking about running for the Pennsylvania Senate seat currently held by Sen. Connie Williams, Lower Merion attorney Lance Rogers has thrown his hat into the ring.
Rogers, who serves as a Lower Merion Township Commissioner, wants to be the next state Senator from the 17th Senatorial District in Montgomery County. The seat has been held by Williams since 2001, but she recently announced that she will not seek a new four-year term.
"After carefully considering how I can best and most effectively serve my community, I have decided to run for the Pennsylvania State Senate," Rogers said in a press release. "During my tenure as Commissioner, I have worked hard on behalf of the residents of Lower Merion Township by fighting tax increases, promoting smart suburban growth and increasing public safety. As Chair of Lower Merion's Fire Committee, I have been a strong advocate for Lower Merion's volunteer firefighters. I will continue my efforts on these very important issues in Harrisburg."
Rogers said he has raised more than $100,000 so far for his state senate campaign and has been urged and supported by numerous local, county and state Republican officials to run for the State Senate.
Rogers said he will focus on the following issues: "smarter, more responsive state government, lower taxes, a better educational system and more affordable healthcare."
The Democratic candidate will most likely be another lawyer, state Rep. Daylin Leach, who is giving up his 149th District House seat to run for Williams' seat.
Leach, arguably the most liberal member of the Pennsylvania House, has had an undistinguished career since joining the state House in 2003.
Leach doesn't have anywhere near the money or name recognition that Williams has, so expect the 17th District Senate seat to be competitive in 2008.
