Candidates jockey for 17th District state Senate seat

Montgomery County political reporter Margaret Gibbons has a story in today's edition of The Times Herald in Norristown about the maneuvering for for Pennsylvania's 17th Senatorial District seat, where Sen. Connie Williams is not seeking re-election.

Williams, a Democrat, has held the Montgomery County seat since 2001.

The leading Republican candidate is Lance Rogers, an attorney who serves as a Lower Merion Township Commissioner. Rogers was a registered Independent, but changed his registration to Republican in anticipation of running for the state Senate.

Williams is also bragging that he has already raised $100,000 for the race in an attempt to scare off any challengers.

A potential opponent in the primary would be Montgomery County Sheriff John Durante, a Republican who was re-elected to a four-year term in November.

On the Democratic side, state Rep. Daylin Leach is giving up his 149th District seat to run for Williams' state Senate seat. Leach, possibly the most liberal member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, has had an undistinguished political career since joining the state House in 2003.

Another candidate is radio talk show host Robert A. Rovner, a Democratic lawyer from Lower Merion who once served in the state Senate when he lived in Bucks County.
