Arlen Specter is the biggest RINO in Pennsylvania

The results are in and Sen. Arlen Specter has been named the biggest RINO (Republican In Name Only) in Pennsylvania for 2007.

Specter, a registered Republican who frequently votes with Democrats, narrowly beat out Montgomery County Commissioner Jim "Turncoat" Matthews for the top spot in my unscientific poll.

Specter was named the biggest RINO by 39 percent of poll voters, followed by Matthews at 33 percent. Bringing up the rear were Rep. John Perzel at 14 percent and Rep. Dennis O'Brien at 13 percent.

Specter, who has already announced plans to seek re-election in 2010, has long been the target of conservatives. Specter is more likely to vote with the state's other senator, liberal Bob Casey Jr., than the Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

And while Specter is stockpiling tons of cash for his re-election bid, he has to be nervous at the Iowa caucus results, where Mike Huckabee spent $300,000 and defeated Mitt Romney, who spent $7 million. It's not always the person with the most money or biggest name recognition who wins. (Specter came within a few thousand votes of losing his last primary election against conservative Pat Toomey.)

As for Matthews, he could capture the top RINO of 2008 title depending on what he does Monday, when the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners holds its annual reorganization meeting. Despite a solid GOP victory in 2007 led by Bruce Castor, Matthews is planning to form an alliance with liberal Joe Hoeffel to run one of the biggest counties in the state.

Not much to say about Perzel, who is turning into the Dick Cheney of Pennsylvania politics or Dennis O'Brien, who will fade into history at the end of this year. Both are registered Republicans from Philadelphia, but usually vote with Democrats.
