Someone forgot to change the calendar

Gov. Rendell's press office put out a release today announcing that the governor will deliver his "2007-08 Budget Address to Joint Session of House and Senate" on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

One slight problem. This is 2008. The governor delivered his 2007-08 budget last February. This would his 2008-09 budget address.

I'm guessing Rendell will offer pretty much the same budget to the Legislature that he delivered last year, so why bother changing anything in it?

You remember the 2007-08 budget don't you? That was the one with $2 billion in new spending and seven new or increased taxes. Rendell got his spending increase, but the Republican-controlled Senate drew the line on any tax increases.

And if Rendell couldn't get any of his budget priorities past the Senate in 2007, months after coming off his landslide reelection to a second term, what chance does have in 2008 when his is a lame duck?

Rendell's budget speech begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday and will be carried live on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.
