Rick Santorum must not have gotten the memo from the Republican Party establishment.
In a week when some big-name Republicans are falling into line and endorsing Sen. John McCain, Santorum, the former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, has endorsed Mitt Romney.
Romney should be the choice of conservatives, according to Santorum, the two-term senator who lost his re-election bid in 2006.
"In a few short days, Republicans from across this country will decide more than their party's nominee," Santorum said. "They will decide the very future of our party and the conservative coalition that Ronald Reagan built. Conservatives can no longer afford to stand on the sidelines in this election, and Gov. Romney is the candidate who will stand up for the conservative principles that we hold dear."
While Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Fla. Sen. Mel Martinez, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani have thrown their support to McCain in the past week, Santorum is backing Romney just days before the crucial Super Tuesday votes in more than 20 states.
"Gov. Romney has a deep understanding of the important issues confronting our country today, and he is the clear conservative candidate that can go into the general election with a united Republican party."
Romney said he is honored to have Santorum's support. Hell, at this point, Romney will take anybody's endorsement.
"Throughout his career of public service, he (Santorum) has always led with a steadfast commitment to our party's conservative principles, Romney said. "He has fought for life, marriage, tax cuts and a stronger national defense. In the coming days, I look forward to working with him as we fight for our party's conservative foundations."
Since leaving the Senate, Santorum has taken a position as a senior fellow with The Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., is a contributor on Fox News Channel, and a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Hopefully, this will be one of the kicks in the pants Mitt needs. McCain has been endorsed, by and large, by the more liberal faction of the Republican Party. That suits the MSM crowd just fine, since McCain has been their darling from Day 1. The NYT's endorsement of McCain was nothing more than an anointment of a sacrificial lamb to the Shrill One, IMN-SHO.
We need a strong opponent against Hillary and McCain just isn't it.
I am glad to read that Rick has backed Romney. I still cannot figure out why Brownback backed McCain. From everything you hear and read, it seems that Romney has no chance - the conservatives in the House and Senate need to step up and back Romney and face the politial backlash that may result.
