Pennsylvania taxpayers will help pay for soccer stadium

Politicians have picked the pockets of Pennsylvania taxpayers in recent years to help build football stadiums, baseball stadiums and hockey rinks for multi-millionaire owners.

The latest fleecing of taxpayers involves building a soccer stadium in Chester, Delaware County. The state is planning to kick in $47 million of your hard-earned tax dollars to help fund the private development. (When was the last time you sat through a professional soccer game?)

The Mercury gives Gov. Ed Rendell and Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware, a Thorn in today's editorial page.

Lowman Henry weighs in on the soccer funding at his Web site.

"Setting aside the absurd thought that pro soccer can actually make it in Pennsylvania (flower arranging at Heinz field is more likely to succeed), why should state taxpayers pony up $47 million dollars to subsidize a private venture? If the stadium and a pro soccer franchise are such a good business investment, let the owners spend their own money," Henry writes.
