Today marks the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Nearly 3,000 men, women and children died that day when two hijacked airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. Another jetliner crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. A fourth commandeered airplane, United 93, crashed in western Pennsylvania after the passengers fought back against the terrorists to prevent another attack on either the White House or the Capitol.
The United States has been at war with Islamic extremists for the past seven years, carrying the fight to the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iraq and many other places around the globe. More than 4,000 U.S. soldiers have lost their lives in defense of their nation since 9/11/01.
There have been no terrorist attacks on American soil for the past 2,555 days.
Thank you to President Bush and his administration, to all our men and women in uniform and everyone who works in Homeland Security, for keeping us safe.
