Lawmakers vow to override Rendell veto on spot tax assessments

A pair of Schuylkill County lawmakers say they will work to override Gov. Ed Rendell's veto of House and Senate legislation designed to protect homeowners from spot assessments by school districts.

"This is not over," state Rep. Tim Seip, D-125, told the Pottsville Republican Herald newspaper. "I will pursue every legislative avenue available to me. I know constituents who were singled out for unfair appeals."

Seip, a freshman Democrat who sponsored House Bill 1438, is getting an ally from an unlikely corner.

"I feel the same way," state Sen. James J. Rhoades, R-29, the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 1247, told the newspaper.

Rendell is no friend of Pennsylvania taxpayers. In his veto message, he said the legislation in question went too far in preventing school districts and counties from collecting property tax revenues.
