GOP tries to woo back anti-Hillary voters

Attention Pennsylvania Republican voters: If you insist on changing your party affiliation so you can vote against Hillary Clinton on April 22, we understand. But please ... please ... pretty please ... we're begging you ... come back to the GOP on April 23.

That pretty much sums up the announcement that the Montgomery County Republican Party has set up a Web site to facilitate re-registering Republicans planning to vote in the April 22 Democratic Party primary.

"We have started a Web site, www.votegoppa.com, to help Republicans across the state come back home to their party after the primary," said Montco GOP Chairman Ken Davis. "Voters can go to votegoppa.com where they can provide us with their mailing address and we'll send them a Republican voter registration form. It's just that easy."

Voters statewide can access www.votegoppa.com to register Republican before and after the primary, according to the Montco GOP, which plans to work with counties across the Commonwealth in a coordinated effort to re-register Republicans.

"While I don't like Republicans registering Democrat to vote for or against a Democrat candidate," Davis said. "I want our Republican voters to know that we look forward to them coming back home on April 23rd."

The irony of Ken Davis working to rebuild the Republican Party cannot be overstated. Davis, who is not seeking re-election, has spent the past four years tearing apart the Montgomery County Republican Party.

These are desperate times for the once-dominant Montgomery County GOP and the times call for desperate measures. Bill Shaw over at the Writemarsh blog recently noted that the the Montgomery County GOP has lost nearly 50,000 voters since Ken Davis took office in 2004.

The desire to vote against Hillary Clinton isn't going to help matters. More than 65,000 Pennsylvania residents have registered as Democrats in preparation for the primary, compared to 3,000 new registered Republican voters, according to the most recent figures released by the state.

Final totals on how many Republicans switched teams for the April 22 primary won't be available until after the voter registration deadline passes.

Only voters registered with a party can vote in that party's primary under Pennsylvania law. March 24 is the last day to register to vote in Pennsylvania's April 22 primary.

For information, call 1-877-868-3772 or go to www.votespa.com.

Because I was registered as an Independent (No Preference)and wanted to vote against someone, I had to register as a Democrat. I will re-register as an independent after the primary election.

Many others are changing parties to vote for or against a person only to change back to their original party after the primary.

How much money could the election boards save (taxpayer's money) if Pennsylvania would hold open primaries?

This is not a new problem as Independents have been changing for primaries for many years, but this is probably the worst year for changes between Republicans and Democrats.

Let's save us all money and open up the primary elections.

Sorry GOP. I'm leaving and I won't be back. The last 8 years have cured me of voting Republican.
