Inside look at PA GOP 'follies'

Interesting post at the the Berks Conservative blog about some of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering at the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee meeting over the weekend.

A lot of the party's recent problems (losing the governor's mansion, a U.S. Senate seat, the state House, several Congressional seats and state judicial seats) start at the committee meetings.

The blog questions the wisdom of the state GOP endorsing candidates prior to the primary election. In this case, it was candidates for judicial races.

From the post by John Fielding, who attendedthe meeting:
The fact is, Joan Orie Melvin and Sally Mundy got the endorsement for reason other than qualifications (Sally Mundy because of hubby, and Joan Melvin because her sister is a state senator).

I don't support people for these reasons, and because endorsement processes lead to the wrong people being supported for the wrong reasons, I don't support those, either.
Fielding says the PA GOP has failed to learn from past mistakes:
I'm from Berks County. I came from Montgomery County. There, I experienced the "wisdom" of the party leaders thinking they had better judgment than the people. By the way, when was the last time a real Republican won in Montco? (Well, there's Jim Matthews but I rest my case). So, when I came to Berks, I was firmly entrenched in an "anti-endorsement" mindset.

Bruce Castor is a "Real Republican".

He was only surpassed in vote count by another "Real Republican", District Attorney, Risa Vetri Ferman.

Jon Fox, Ellen Harley (endorsed by leadership until overruled by the hoi polloi), Frank Lalley (Bob Asher's bottle opener), not to mention the numerous school board elections in North Penn where the party endorsed all the losers and liberals. etc., etc., etc. When was the last time the party leadership was able to nominate someone to win the 13th? Asher came over here in 2008 to "help" us. I suggested that he remove the beam from his own eye (Montco) before he came over to remove our mote.
