Lawmaker: Pa. cell phone ban e-mail is a hoax

State Rep. Tom Quigley, R-Montgomery County, thought it was odd when a constituent called him today to ask about the passage of a law banning the use of cell phones while driving.

The caller didn't recall seeing anything in his local newspaper about the the ban. Quigley certainly would have remembered casting a vote if such a bill had come before the Legislature in Harrisburg.

Quigley did some checking and he determined that the rumor of a ban was being circulated via e-mail to residents all over the state.

A "Legislative Brief" from an unidentified source confused the introduction of the cell phone ban bill on Sept. 11 with the actual passage of that bill into law. The bill in question, House Bill 1827, has not received any votes as of today and currently remains in the House Transportation Committee, Quigley said.

HB 1827 is scheduled to be discussed as a part of a distracted driving public hearing by the House Transportation Committee on Oct. 15. There may be a committee vote on this bill some time after the hearing, Quigley said.

It's not just people in Southeastern Pennsylvania who may have been misled by the hoax e-mail.

Here is a story from a Pittsburgh TV station's Web site on the cell phone law hoax, which may have fooled members of a police department, too.
