'Government hypocrisy at its worst'

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review doesn't think much of Gov. Ed Rendell's proposal to legalize video poker machines to generate more revenue for the state.

From today's editorial:
Pennsylvania recently spent more than $3 million to crack down on the supposed scourge of illegal video poker and slots machines in local watering holes. It was all in the name of eradicating vice in pursuit of protecting the state's legalized slots monopoly.

Hey, we're all for ending the silly persecution of local watering holes. It's government hypocrisy at its worst. But this plan to apply the proceeds to tuition is the surest way to give these institutions of higher learning the perfect cover to jack up tuition costs. It's a proven fact that government tuition aid artificially inflates demand and average tuition.
