Tip: Leave the explosive souvenirs behind

A lot of people bring back souvenirs from the Jersey Shore. Some of the trinkets you buy at shops on the boardwalk. Others you pick up on the beach.

Increasingly people are bringing back souvenirs that could up costing somebody an arm or a leg. Digging up unexploded mortar rounds is all the rage. Sure it's fun to show off your discovery to friends and neighbors -- until one of those shells blows up.

This is one of those things where common sense comes in, but a lot of Shore visitors leave their brains behind.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to anyone who has brought back something other than sea shells.

"I am reaching out to the public to ask anyone that brought one of these home within the last three years to notify us," Sheriff John P. Durante said. "Do not touch them, stay away from them. All explosives are dangerous."

Durante added:
These, we understand, are being recovered at the Jersey Shore on the beaches of Long Island for the last three years or so. These munitions were probably disposed of at sea. Our speculation is that they were souvenirs found and brought home. We believe these things were taken innocently, there was no intent for any criminal purpose other than to say, 'I have a souvenir.'
