Louisiana Legislature Considers Pay Hike

I guess they didn't learn from Pennsylvania's example.

The Louisiana state legislature is planning to give itself a $28 million pay raise. If the measure is approved, the Louisiana lawmakers would become the 8th highest paid in the country.

Pennsylvania lawmakers (the second-highest paid in the country) gave themselves a massive pay raise in July 2005, but public outcry forced the Legislature to repeal the pay raise by that fall.

The following year, 55 incumbent legislators were replaced by the voters.

The ill-fated pay raise (which included more money for judges and the executive branch) also forced out three of the seven Supreme Court justices who held office during the pay raise vote.

The top leadership of the Pennsylvania Legislature also changed hands as voters took their revenge at the greedy lawmakers in the voting booth.

Will history repeat in Louisiana? Politicians have been known to make the same mistakes over and over.

A national taxpayers' group is opposing the measure. Read more about the National Taxpayers Union's objections at the link below.
