Rendell PAC fined for 20 violations

I missed this story when it first broke last week, but considering it was buried on page B6 of the local section of The Philadelphia Inquirer, it was easy to miss.

A political committee with ties to Gov. Rendell has agreed to pay $15,750 in fines to the Philadelphia Board of Ethics to settle a lawsuit, according to reporter Marcia Gelbart. By paying the fines, the Pennsylvanians for Better Leadership PAC admitted it violated the city's campaign finance rules 20 times.

From the article:

Richard Glazer, the ethics board's chairman, called the settlement "another chapter in the continuing saga of business as usual with no sincere effort at compliance."

Glazer said during yesterday's monthly Ethics Board meeting that "there is something not quite right about a system that essentially invites the well-financed and powerful, in this case Gov. Rendell, to direct contributions to city candidates through a PAC without public disclosure. To do this with impunity tends to undermine the ability to follow the political money through the system and the transformational goal of transparency."

$15,750. fine, when we are talking people who make PAC fund contributions ie Duggin's $60,000. and Rendell's $155,000. To them it is considered the cost of doing business. Spread over the 20 receipients it amounts to $875. more per/violation and they bought the candidate. As usual we have both Republicans, Democrats and a lot of Eddie and Arlen's friends with dirty hands.
