Newspaper backs Kevin Lee over Harrisburg veteran Nick Micozzie

The Delaware County Daily & Sunday Times has published its endorsements in 10 Legislative races in Delaware County. Nothing too surprising except the endorsement of newcomer Kevin Lee over state Rep. Nick Micozzie in the 163rd District.

Almost all of the rest of the newspaper's endorsements went to incumbents.

Here's what the newspaper said about the Lee-Micozzie race:
Nick Micozzie has been in Harrisburg about as long as anyone can remember. The Republican has held the seat representing parts of Upper Darby, Aldan and Clifton Heights for 30 years. Micozzie has been a formidable presence in the Capitol, in particular for his work in trying to build a new formula for education funding in the state. He's also been an active player in the health-care debate as chairman of the House Insurance Committee. In most years, his re-election is a foregone conclusion, in part because of weak Democratic opposition. Not this time. He's opposed by Lansdowne Borough Councilman Kevin Lee. Lee also brings a background in health care to the table. He's a registered nurse, and would bring a unique perspective to what is sure to be a bruising health-care debate in Harrisburg next year. He's running because he feels the change that is needed must be effected at the state level. "Thirty years is long enough," he says of Micozzie's long reign. Micozzie has had a long, distinguished stint in Harrisburg. But this is one instance where we heed the call for change. Our endorsement goes to the newcomer Lee.

I live in Clifton Heights and was shocked at the Times' endorsement of Lee. It is about time that the paper realizes that this isn't 1978 anymore. Nick has had 30 years to make himself rich and make his mark on government. Let's thank him and send him on his way.

I was surprised the Times endorsed Lee as well. Maybe it is because of the recent ethics complaints filed in Harrisburg about Uncle Nick's manipulation of tax dollars for political contributors. Or could it be the Sen. Ted Stevens like lawsuit that was filed against Micozzie recently. Seems that he didn't pay for $80000 worth of renovations on his home. And of course none of the papers are picking up on it.
