Cop killer gets death sentence

Cletus C. Rivera, 26, Reading, was sentenced to death by a jury that found him guilty of the shooting death of Reading Police Officer Scott A. Wertz on Aug. 6, 2006.

The jury had to choose between the death penalty and life in prison.

But since Pennsylvania doesn't enforce the death penalty, Rivera essentially received a sentence of life in prison. Rivera is the 11th Berks County resident on death row. Some of the cases date back to the mid-1980s.

Does anyone remember the last time a prisoner on Pennsylvania's death row was executed? I don't.
