Columnist: Bush was a good president

As Bush-bashing from the mainstream media continues right up to the final days, columnist Christine M. Flowers says George W. Bush has been "reviled and underestimated more than any other president in recent memory."

Writing in the Philadelphia Daily News, Flowers sticks her neck out and offers a list of significant Bush accomplishments over the past eight years.

"First and foremost, there haven't been any targeted attacks on U.S. soil since 19 madmen filled the skies with terror seven years ago," Flowers writes.

More from Flowers' column:
Beyond domestic security, Bush tried to resolve the immigration mess by backing proposals that, counter to many in his party, would have recognized that you can't just deport millions of people. He proposed a guest worker program, was realistic about the plight of employers and caught a lot of heat from the right for his willingness to compromise with immigrant activists.

Bush also tried to improve education with No Child Left Behind, the controversial program that puts the emphasis on accountability. It may not be perfect (and let's not forget that his partner on this reform was liberal icon Ted Kennedy), but it's a clear step in the right direction.

He nominated two brilliant men to the high court - judges, not legislators who thought it was their job to create new rights. And he did more than any other president, Democrat or Republican, to fight AIDS.

He was a good president. He did what was right, and what he thought was right. No one likes war. Why would you? But someone has to wage it. Bush was the man with the balls to do it. Clinton AND his father both avoided the war. Bush knew enough was enough. Before you go off and say how much you hate him, think about why. Do you even have a good reason? Are you willing to bet your soul you're right about it? Or do you just want to believe it because you want to hate him? These are very valid questions, and many people do hate him because they feel like they should. It's all in the media, baby. You'd be an idiot to think it wasn't. Nuff' said.
