How stupid are House Democrats?

Commenting on the latest courtroom revelations linking Democratic House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese with the Bonusgate scandal, Lowman Henry can't figure out why House Democrats are sticking by DeWeese.

While DeWeese hasn't been charged, his former chief of staff testified in court this week that DeWeese knew about and helped direct the use of taxpayer funds for political purposes.

The Democratic Caucus regained the majority in the state House in 2006 after 12 years of Republican control. The Bonusgate indictments allege that top-ranking Democrats paid out $1.2 million on bonus money to state workers who spent time working to get Democrats elected instead of doing their state jobs.

"You would think the House Democratic caucus would want to clean house before voters go to the polls next month to minimize the impact on their electoral changes," Henry writes at Lincoln Blog. "Out of fear, ineptitude, or a combination of both, the caucus has failed to act."

More from Henry:
I am frequently tempted to portray state House Republicans under the timid leadership of Minority Leader Sam Smith and the continued behind-the-scenes intrigue of deposed former Speaker John Perzel as the most inept bunch to lead a legislative caucus in a long time. House Democrats though are giving them a run for their money when it comes to downright stupidity.
