Inmates escape from work-release detail at county fair

Don't you just love it?

Two Berks County Prison inmates escaped from a work-release detail at the Reading Fair, which is held every August off Route 183 just north of Reading.

Is it smart to allow prisoners to mingle among a large crowd like an agricultural fair?

It appears nobody was watching the prisoners. They were on the honor system and were supposed to report back to authorities when the fairgrounds closed in the evening.

The inmates managed to steal a truck for their getaway. The truck was later recovered by police, but no sign of the prisoners.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the two inmates is asked to call state police at 610-378-4011.

Read more about the escape at the Reading Eagle Web site.
