The courage of Joe Lieberman

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, a lifelong Democrat, and the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in 2000, has been invited and has agreed to speak at the Republican National Convention.

John McCain is showing once again that he is willing to reach out to Democrats and independents, something Barack Obama has failed to demonstrate so far.

It's not the first time a Democrat has spoken at a Republican Convention. Former Georgia Sen. Zell Miller made a rousing speech in support of George W. Bush at the 2004 GOP national convention.

Lieberman's speech will be greeted with equal enthusiasm by GOP Convention Delegates.

It's what happens to Lieberman after the convention that concerns the editorial board of Investor's Business Daily.

From an editorial in today's edition:
Joseph Lieberman will be called a Judas for speaking to the Republican Convention, but he was betrayed by his own party for refusing to support losing a war for political gain.

To Lieberman's eternal credit, he was the only prominent Democrat willing to fight hard against the party line of surrender.

It won't be the first time a mob of cowards has ganged up on a hero, but at least they don't have the power to throw him out of the Senate, where he serves at the pleasure of the people of Connecticut. His home state and the country can continue to be proud of a rare politician who has proved his patriotism while under fire.
