Up in smoke

The Pottstown Mercury says in an editorial today that the Pennsylvania's three-month smoking ban is already full of loopholes. Adding more would defeat the purpose of the law. And why are public sector employees so special that they should be exempt from the law?

From the editorial:

THORNS to administrators of Pennsylvania's 14 state-owned universities who are proposing to relax parts of a nearly 3-month-old outdoor campus smoking ban. State System of Higher Education spokesman Kenn Marshall says the system is proposing the changes following recent discussions with employee unions that have opposed the ban. Marshall says the system may allow employees to smoke inside their cars with the windows up and on sidewalks along public roads that pass through the campuses. He says the system is also considering providing receptacles for cigarette butts on the campus perimeters. The outdoor ban was enacted to comply with the new statewide indoor smoking ban. The smoking ban adopted in Pennsylvania already has enough loopholes without suggestions to weaken it even further.

Any freedom loving American should be against a smoking ban. It should be the choice of private employers and private businessess as to their preferences. This however is the price to pay for the Nanny State...they provide the benefits, they set the ground rules. Us fat guys are next, if you buy transfats and get caught, you pay more for healthcare.
