With Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss taking an early lead Tuesday in Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff and comedian Al Franken fading in Minnesota, it appears the takeover of U.S. government by Democrats has been forestalled.
The Senate should remain a 58-42 Democratic majority, two shy of the magic 60 the Democrats needed to have a filibuster-proof majority, essentially turning to the U.S. into one-party state.
With 44 percent of precincts reporting, Chambliss had 61 percent of the vote to Democrat Jim Martin's 39 percent. And Franken is losing ground in the recount election as his Republican opponent, incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman, appears to have held on to his seat.
