Pennsylvania State Police said 16 people, including two operators of all-terrain vehicles, were killed in crashes investigated by State Police during the Labor Day holiday driving period.
That's twice as many as where killed over the same period in 2007.
From a release issued Monday by Acting State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski:
In addition to the 16 fatalities, 412 people were injured in the 789 crashes to which troopers responded during the period (Friday through Monday). Eleven of those who were killed were not wearing seat belts and four of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
Two ATV operators were killed Sunday when four ATVs collided in Cooper Township, Clearfield County. Three other people were seriously injured in that crash.
Three people were killed and 10 others were injured Sunday when a van went off I-380 and flipped over near Moscow, Lackawanna County. During the holiday driving period, troopers issued 6,371 speeding citations, arrested 334 for driving under the influence, cited 389 for failing to wear seat belts, and issued 55 citations for not securing children in child safety seats.
During last year's four-day Labor Day driving period, eight people were killed and 342 were injured in 739 crashes to which troopers responded. The crash numbers cover only those incidents investigated by state police and do not include statistics on crashes to which other law-enforcement agencies responded.
