Four of Pennsylvania's largest casinos sent a letter to each member of the Pennsylvania Legislature Thursday urging them to support Senate Bill 1033 to legalize table games at the state's slots parlors.
The gambling industry supports the $10 million one-time licensing fee and 12% tax rate proposed in SB 1033, which is supposed to help with the state's current fiscal crisis.
It wasn't too long ago that Gov. Ed Rendell, the chief proponent of legalized gambling in Pennsylvania, promised that approval of slots would subtantially reduce property taxes for Pennsylvania residents. That was in 2004. We're in 2009 and property taxes are at an all-time high.
I don't trust Rendell or any of his promises. And I'm not buying the gambling industry's figures either.
