Disturbing news today from the Pennsylvania State Police about the number of DUI arrests in the state. More than 15,000 DUI arrests were made by state police in 2007, a 3-percent increase over the previous year.
On the one hand, I'm glad to see Pennsylvania State Police are arresting more drunk drivers than ever, but why does Pennsylvania have such a big problem with drunk driving?
And keep in mind that the statistics listed in the link below (15,500 arrests) are just for the state police. Most DUI arrests are made by local police, so this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I bet everyone knows at least one person who has been charged with DUI. Why is the problem getting worse? Do we need tougher sentences? Are we giving people a slap on the wrist and letting them get behind the wheel again? State police said more than 500 DUI fatalities were reported in 2007.
