Congratulations to Bob Kerns, the new chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party.
The Upper Gwynedd attorney was unanimously elected party chairman Thursday evening.
That means the nightmare years of Ken Davis/Bob Asher are over. The party has been in a steady decline under the Davis/Asher leadership, losing its majority in Montgomery County, struggling financially and losing elections.
Kerns has a tough road ahead to rebuild the party after all the damage Kerns and Asher have done in the past four years, but he's got no place to go but up.
I have a suggestion for Mr. Kerns. Stop by the Montgomery County Commissioners' office in Norristown and hand Jim Matthews a change or registration card. If Matthews is going to allow Democrat Joe Hoeffel to call the shots, he might as well change his own party registration to Democrat. As far as I'm concerned the only Republican serving on the commissioners' board is Bruce Castor Jr.
Not getting as much attention is the rest of the slate elected Thursday.
The new vice chairwoman of the Montgomery County Republican Party is Pottstown Mayor Sharon Thomas. Adding a black woman to a high-profile post is a sign that the GOP is becoming more diverse.
The rest of the officers area Treasurer Robert Griffith, Abington's GOP municipal leader; and, secretaries William Dennis, Mary Ann Fichter, Janet Garner, Ethel Ritchey, Robert Stokley and Al Zollers.
