GOP prospects improve in 70th state House District

With Democrats holding a razor-thing majority in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Nov. 4 election could tip the balance of power either way.

But at least one Montgomery County House seat that was in danger of falling to the Democrats is looking much better for the GOP.

Democrat Dwayne Royster has dropped out of the contest for the 70th District state House seat.

Incumbent Republican state Rep. Jay Moyer, who won the seat in 2006 by just 73 votes, is breathing a sigh of relief.

Royster, pastor of the Living Water United Church of Christ, cited "personal reasons" in announcing his decision to withdraw, according to reporter Margaret Gibbons of the Times-Herald in Norristown.

In his letter of resignation, the 38-year-old Royster said it was "in the best interest of my family to withdraw," Gibbons writes. Royster, who lives in Norristown, has a wife and a daughter.

"Until he became a candidate, I do not think he realized how much time it would take away from his family and church," Montgomery County Democratic Committee political director Stephen Carter told Gibbons

The Montgomery County Democratic Party has to select another candidate to run in Royster's place by Aug. 21, Carter told Gibbons.

Although he's not out of the wood yet, Moyer should be able to hold the seat. Moyer, a former Lower Salford Township Commissioner, previously served as Montgomery County Treasurer.

The 70th District includes Lower Salford and Worcester and parts of Norristown, East Norriton, Skippack and Towamencin.
