Columnist: Stakes high in Bonusgate trial

Former Democratic honcho Mike Veon is the one on trial, but Tom Corbett's political career is also riding on the verdict in the current Bonusgate trial in Harrisburg, argues columnist Kevin Cramsey.

From his new column:
There is a lot riding on the outcome of the case against former House Democratic Whip Mike Veon and three others on trial in Harrisburg as part of the state’s Bonusgate corruption probe.

For one thing, the result could have significant impact on the Republican primary for governor.

Guilty verdicts would no doubt do a lot for sewing up the nomination for Attorney General Tom Corbett, whose office is prosecuting these and other Bonusgate cases.

Conversely, acquittals could be the shot-in-the-arm needed by Corbett's underdog challenger, Rep. Sam Rohrer.

Corbett's got the money and the party endorsement, but Rohrer has a solid conservative base that cannot be taken lightly.
