'Avatar' passes 'Star Wars' as top sci-fi film

I'm not sure what George Lucas was doing front-and-center at Sunday night's Golden Globes ceremony other than to watch James Cameron pick up Best Director and Best Picture/Drama awards.

In the days leading up to the Golden Globes telecast, "Avatar" passed "Star Wars" on the All-Time Box-Office list. "Star Wars" had the advantage of its original 1977 run, plus a 1982 re-issue and a 1997 release of a special edition.

With "Star Wars" vanquished, look for a renewed ad campaign as the "Golden Globe" winner for Best Picture as "Avatar" sets its sights on "The Dark Knight" ... and dare we say it, Cameron's own "Titanic."

(Can you imagine how good the three "Star Wars" prequels could have been had George Lucas hired real directors like James Cameron to make them instead of directing them himself?)

Here are the top domestic grosses of all time:
1 Titanic $600,788,188 1997
2 The Dark Knight $533,345,358 2008
3 Avatar $505,067,000 2009
4 Star Wars $460,998,007 1977
