House Appropriations Chairman Dwight Evans, D-Phila., commenting on the news that Pennsylvania is facing a $3 billion budget deficit for the current fiscal year: "Right now, the numbers are staggering. We have a lot of work to do. We have to be reasonable and we have to compromise," Evans told the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Wasn't that the same Dwight Evans who was all smiles and giving out high-fives to Gov. Ed Rendell and former Sen. Vincent Fumo when Rendell announced the budget agreement last July?
All three knew there was no way Rendell's sham budget would be balanced. The state has reported 13 consecutive months of tax revenue shortfalls.
The Philadelphia Business Journal also reported that Evans introduced Rendell's 2009-10 budget of $29 billion today. So let me see if I get this straight. The current budget is going to finish $3 billion in the red but Rendell and his Democratic lapdogs in the House want to increase next year's budget by $700 million?
It's clear that Rendell and his cohorts in the Legislature don't have a clue.
