Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted civilian labor force -- the number of people working or looking for work -- was virtually unchanged in April, down 3,000 residents to 6,431,000, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.
Pennsylvania's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 percent for the second consecutive month, the department reports.
Prior to April, the state's unemployment rate had risen for 14 consecutive months.
The United States' unemployment rate continued to rise, increasing four-tenths of a point to 8.9 percent in April.
Gov. Ed Rendell is elated that the fiscal mess he largely created with uncontrolled spending appears to have bottomed out.
"It is a good sign, especially during a national recession, to see our unemployment rate stabilize from one month to the next, while the national rate continued its steady climb up nearly half a percent," Rendell said. "For 76 out of the past 77 months, our unemployment rate has been at or below the nation's rate.
