More party switchers in Montco

Margaret Gibbons, who covers Montgomery County government and politics for the Journal Register newspaper group, is working on a story that says two additional well-known GOP women -- Montgomery County GOP Committee Solicitor Wendy Rothstein and Norristown GOP Municipal Chairwoman Frances V. Pierce -- have switched their registrations to Democrat.

The news comes on the heels of two other prominent GOP woman -- Karen Matthews and Lita Cohen, a former state representative -- registered as Democrats for the April 22 primary. See my earlier post, "Top GOP official's wife registers as Democrat."

Karen Matthews, the wife of Montgomery County Commissioners' Chairman Jim Matthews, said she made the switch so she can vote against Hillary Clinton, but Cohen said she's backing Hillary Clinton for president.

Rothstein told Gibbons she will switch back to the GOP after the primary, but Pierce's switch appears to be more permanent. Both women have resigned from any party posts they held, according to Gibbons.

Top GOP officials are worried that many Republicans who have changed their party registration to cast a vote in the Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton contest may never come back to the party. The number of registered Democrats in Pennsylvania grew by 235,000, or 6 percent, since last November's election, according to the state.

The Republican Party has also started a Web site, http://www.votegoppa.com, to help make changing registration back to the GOP easier after the April 22 Pennsylvania primary.

Look for the full story on the party switchers in Wednesday's editions of The Mercury and The Times-Herald.

Tony, this post is weak, especially Killion's comment. The 5th Ward has not been a democrat stronghold for at least the 20 plus years I have lived there. And as for some facts: Lisa was appointed to the Board of Commissioners after Al Citro resigned and was then elected in a race against a "non-candidate".
