McCain: Suspend gas tax to help working Americans

Finally, a presidential candidate proposes something tangible that will help working class Americans.

We've heard all the pie-in-the-sky promises from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but until today, none of the three presidential contenders have backed something that will help the middle class immediately.

Sen. John McCain today called for a suspension of the federal gas tax (along with a freeze on spending) to help working Americans deal with skyrocketing gasoline prices.

McCain's plan would eliminate the federal gas tax (currently 18 cents a gallon) from Memorial Day to Labor Day -- the peak driving season. That's money in the pockets of everyone who drives a car.

And if by some miracle, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell would enact a similar holiday on the state gas tax (32 cents), consumers would see gas prices drop by 50 cents a gallon.
