From a recent editorial:
Beating up Corbett: To what end?
Tom Corbett soon could have a new nickname -- "Punching Bag."
The Pennsylvania attorney general is considered the front-running candidate for the Republican nomination for governor next year. He has yet to announce for office, though he has been on the hustings, a necessity of contemporary politics.
But Mr. Corbett, of Shaler, the one-time U.S. attorney in Pittsburgh who also restored dignity to the AG's office after the Ernie Preate indignity, is in the middle of prosecuting a protracted investigation into allegations of corruption in the state Capitol.
Democrats have borne the brunt of Corbett's probe, focused on the alleged cross-pollination of public and political work. But Republicans, too, are being investigated. Some natives, however, have gotten restless.
Despite myriad pending trials and grand juries still pondering indictments, a DuBois newspaper claims the investigation "is going nowhere." It urges Corbett to end any gubernatorial aspirations and "stay with the investigation until it concludes, or until his term ends."
State Sen. John Eichelberger, R-Altoona, an avowed reformer, last week called Corbett's investigation "a joke."
Both say "politics" could taint the case.
But ignorance should not be allowed to trump reality or prosecutory prerogative. Corbett has made great strides in his investigation and he's done an admirable job of keeping politics out of it.
Period.
