This is low: Stealing from disabled veterans

I'm amazed at how easily people steal money from employers or charities or other nonprofit groups. The temptation is too great for people entrusted with large amounts of money. I can't believe that some groups or businesses don't require 2 signatures on checks or routinely audit people who handle money.

Today's edition of the Reading Eagle has a story about a Berks County woman who stole $365,000 from her employer. But this case gets worse.

The money was stolen from groups that helps disabled veterans. You can't get much lower than than.

Reporter Holly Herman says Kathy Ann Reph pleaded guilty in Lebanon County Court to stealing $364,616 from the AMVETS and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Reph, 53, pleaded guilty to theft, forgery and related charges for stealing the money from July 2000 to June 2005 while she was the agency's secretary, according to the newspaper.
