GOP leaders back Kerns for Montco Party Chairman

The majority of GOP Area leaders in Montgomery County are publicly supporting Bob Kerns for Montgomery County Republican Committee chairman.

A letter endorsing Kerns was signed by 10 of the 15 Area leaders. Also signing the letter were the Municipal Chairpersons of Pottstown and Abington.

The elected party leaders represent 612 of the 824 Republican committee positions, or 74.2 percent of the full committee of the Montgomery County Republican Committee.

The letter was mailed April 1 to all current members of the Montgomery County Republican Committee and also candidates for committee seats to be decided in the April 22 primary election.

"With decades of political experience and the thorough knowledge of both our county and committee required, Bob Kerns is, without question, the person best suited to lead the Republican Party in Montgmery County," the letter states.

Kerns has also been endorsed by most of Montgomery County's Republican elected officials, including County Commissioner Bruce L. Castor Jr., District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, Sheriff John P. Durante, Treasurer Garrett D. Page, Recorder of Deeds Nancy J. Becker and Jury Commissioner Marie N. Cavanaugh.

Kerns, a lawyer and chairman of the Upper Gwynedd GOP, narrowly lost the 2004 and 2006 party chairman elections to Ken Davis, whose tenure has been marked by dissension within the party, loss of key county elections, and declines in registered GOP voters and campaign contributions.

The election of a new party chairman will take place at the party's reorganization convention on May 8.

The other announced candidate for county chairman is Jim Vlahos, a Pottstown-area party leader.
