PA GOP vows to regain lost voters

It must be "news" if it fits inside the pages of The New York Times.

You know things are bad when the The NY Times, house organ of the Democratic Party, notices the seismic shift in party registrations in Pennsylvania.

As of April 6, Democratic registration in Pennsylvania stood at 4.2 million, up nearly 8 percent since the November election, according to The Associated Press. The state had 3.2 million registered Republicans, a drop of nearly 2 percent from the fall. Voters not affiliated with either major party numbered 943,000, a reduction of just over 4 percent.

Pennsylvania Republicans are not taking their status as the state's minority party sitting down.

Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Robert A. Gleason Jr. held a press conference Wednesday to announce the kick off of a statewide voter registration effort. Gleason was joined by several other GOP party officials and candidates.

"The Republican Party of Pennsylvania is committed to reaching out to every single voter that temporarily switched Party registration and welcome them back to the GOP," Gleason said. "I am confident that the bump in Democrat registration is directly tied to people casting their ballot in the bitterly contested Democrat Presidential election, and does not represent a mass ideological shift or a sign that Pennsylvanians are all of a sudden in favor of higher taxes, increased government spending, and a retreat from the War on Terror."

Over the next few weeks, Pennsylvania Republicans will use a grassroots network of volunteers to launch a comprehensive voter registration drive, Gleason said.

"The Party will be providing our volunteers with a list of voters who switched political affiliations and our volunteers will be contacting them and urging them to re-register Republican," Gleason added.
