Ex-news anchor might enter 7th District race

What's up with television people going into politics?

From The Delaware County Daily Times:
Former Fox 29 News anchor Dawn Stensland could soon be on the other side of the cameras as a Republican candidate in the 7th Congressional District.

Rumors that Stensland is considering getting into the race had gained momentum on the Internet Wednesday, but she made no comment either confirming or denying her potential bid in a telephone interview.

The 17-year news veteran currently lives in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia with husband, Larry Mendte. Mendte, a Lansdowne native, had been approached by local GOP leaders to run against then-freshman incumbent U.S. Rep. Joseph Sestak, D-7, of Edgmont, in the 2008 election.

Mendte declined the offer and Sestak went on to beat Republican challenger Craig Williams. Sestak is now leaving the seat open to pursue a Senate bid against longtime incumbent U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa.

Chestnut Hill lies in the 2nd Congressional District, represented by popular U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah. However, there is nothing in the state constitution to prevent a state “inhabitant” from running for any congressional seat in the commonwealth.

Stensland is registered to vote as an Independent, a common practice for those covering the news to avoid criticism of potential bias.

If she does enter the 7th District race, Stensland would have to change her registration in order to face former Delaware County District Attorney and ex-U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan,of Drexel Hill, who appeared to have a clear field for the GOP nomination until Wednesday.
