Democrat Tom Wolf flip flops on Pa. pension crisis

After denying for months that Pennsylvania has a public pension crisis, Democrat Tom Wolf, running for governor, now says he's going to work with the Republican-controlled Legislature to solve the problem. This would be the same Republican-controlled Legislature what won't even work with Republican Gov. Tom Corbett on the state's pension woes, so what are Wolf's chances? Slim and none ... and slim was last seen leaving Harrisburg weeks ago.

Wolf says he'll work with Legislature to deal with pension woes

AHEPA Marks Somber 40th Anniversary of Invasion, Occupation of Cyprus

AHEPA Calls for Removal of Turkish Troops from Cyprus; Movement on Confidence-Building Measures

WASHINGTON, DC - Supreme President Anthony Kouzounis issued the following statement on the 40th anniversary of the illegal invasion and subsequent occupation of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey that occurred July 20, 1974:

"Today we ask, 'How long?' as we mark a somber day-the 40th anniversary of the illegal invasion and occupation of the Republic of Cyprus by the Republic of Turkey. This was, and remains to this very day, an intolerable act; one that is a gross violation of the rule of law, human rights, and democratic ideals. We pause to remember the innocent civilians who lost their lives and the thousands who went missing, including four American citizens whose investigations remain incomplete. The illegal invasion and occupation caused the displacement of 170,000 Greek Cypriot refugees who to this day are unable to return to their homes which is also a violation of human rights as determined by the European Commission on Human Rights. Moreover, Turkey's restrictions upon religious freedom and destruction of Cyprus' cultural and religious heritage in Turkish-occupied Cyprus have been well-documented by the U.S. Helsinki Commission, the Law Library of Congress, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and several media publications.

"In February, the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriots agreed to a Joint Declaration that provided the foundation for the resumption of settlement talks. Included in the declaration was a commitment 'to efforts to implement confidence building measures that will provide a dynamic impetus to the prospect for a united Cyprus.' Unfortunately, after a promising start, the return of Famagusta or movement on other confidence-building measures has stalled, demonstrating Turkey's intransigence. We hope that bridge-building measures such as the Good Friday service that brought Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots together can serve as an inspiration going forward.

"We vigorously applaud the recent high-level engagement by United States government officials with the Republic of Cyprus, including Vice President Joe Biden's historic May visit and subsequent engagement by the vice president and U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Defense officials. We also laud the bipartisan action taken this week by U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, who chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and U.S. Representative Ed Royce, who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Together, they urged the Obama administration to increase attention to the goal of reunifying Cyprus in a joint letter.

"However, the key to a successful settlement rests in Ankara. We once again call on the U.S. government, as we do every year at this time, to convey a strong message to Turkey that it must provide the Turkish Cypriot community with the necessary freedom to negotiate a solution within the United Nations framework, and equally as important, that Turkey must play a constructive role in the movement of confidence-building measures and facilitate the removal of 40,000 of its troops from the island. Thus, on this somber anniversary, we again call on Turkey to begin the removal of its troops from Cyprus. These are troops that we contend would serve a better purpose, especially to NATO, in another theatre, as opposed to Cyprus, where there have been more than 17 million incident-free crossings by Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

"Therefore, we restate our call for a reunified Cyprus with a single sovereignty, single international personality and single citizenship; and with its independence and territorial integrity safeguarded as described in the relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions. We contend that such a solution is in the best interest of all Cypriots, and must emanate from Cypriots themselves without arbitrary timetables.

"We call for these actions in the best interests of the United States. A just and viable solution to the division of Cyprus will strengthen the eastern Mediterranean and bring peace and security to the region. This is especially important with the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves within the exclusive economic zones of the Republic of Cyprus and Israel by a U.S. energy firm. Furthermore, a just and viable solution will aid Turkey's candidacy to become a member of the European Union.

"Today, we say 40 years is too long. Our hope is that we will no longer need to observe this 'black anniversary,' but instead, celebrate the anniversary of a settlement. AHEPA remains committed to doing all within its power to keep the Cyprus issue in the public eye until a just and viable solution that benefits all Cypriots is realized."

AHEPA to Mark Anniversary at Supreme Convention

AHEPA will remember the victims of Turkey's illegal invasion of the Republic of Cyprus with a Moment of Silence at the Opening Ceremony of its 92nd Annual Supreme Convention which will be held July 21, 2014. Also during the convention, AHEPA will host AHI Founder Eugene Rossides, a Life Member of AHEPA, for a presentation on his new book, "Kissinger & Cyprus: A Study in Lawlessness," on July 24, 2014.

AHEPA proudly participated at a "Rally for Cyprus" on Capitol Hill organized by PSEKA that marked the 40th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of the Republic of Cyprus, July 16, 2014. AHEPA Chairman of the Board and Past Supreme President Nicholas Karacostas, a refugee from Cyprus, and Executive Director Basil Mossaidis, represented AHEPA on behalf of Supreme President Anthony Kouzounis. Several Ahepans also participated as representatives of other Hellenic or Diaspora organizations. Philip Christopher, president, PSEKA, is also an AHEPA member and special advisor on Cyprus to the AHEPA National Cyprus & Hellenic Affairs Committee.

"We congratulate PSEKA for organizing an outstanding public awareness and advocacy event," Kouzounis added. "We pledge to continue to work with all organizations to ensure the Cyprus issue remains visible and that a just and viable solution for Cyprus and all Cypriots becomes reality."

Founded in 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia, to protect individuals from the evils of bigotry and discrimination, AHEPA is the largest and oldest grassroots association of American citizens of Greek heritage and Philhellenes with more than 400 chapters across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The mission of AHEPA is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family and Individual Excellence through community service and volunteerism.

GUEST COLUMN: Huddled Masses Didn't Sneak Into US Illegally

By Lowman S. Henry

The flood of illegal immigrants crossing America's southern border has become a crisis.  Those arriving are not "undocumented" or "refugees," what is occurring is a blatant disregard for the immigration policies of the United States, however flawed those policies may be.  We are not dealing with immigrants "yearning to breathe free," rather this is Mexico and the countries of central America dumping their economically dispossessed, gangs and criminals on our doorstep.

This is a humanitarian crisis, with reports of the bodies of small children washing up on the shores of the Rio Grande.  It is a law enforcement crisis as drug cartel "coyotes" transport illegals across the border for money.  It is a political crisis as leaders of both parties have been unable to come together to develop a coherent immigration policy.  It is a foreign policy crisis as Mexico detains one U.S. Marine who accidentally wandered into their territory while sending tens of thousands across our borders and suffering no ill consequence.  It is a constitutional crisis as our president refuses to perform his sworn duties and enforce the immigration laws passed by Congress.

The degree of President Obama's arrogance on this matter was on full display last week as he played pool and drank beer during a visit to Texas rather than tour the border and holding facilities.  Imagine the uproar if President Bush had gone to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and instead of delivering a substantial address while standing in front of the St. Louis Cathedral he had gone off for some Beignets at Café du Monde?

Media reports would have us believe that those flooding across the U.S. border with Mexico are small children looking for a better life in the United States. They are often referred to as "dreamers," an effort to slap lipstick on the immigration crisis pig.  While some are small children, the fact is criminals, drug dealers, and those sick with infectious diseases are also arriving in the current wave.  And how does it benefit those who are small children to separate them from parents and send them into camps filled with miscreants and disease?

The preponderance of the blame for this situation lays with the president and his administration whose refusal to establish effective border security and whose political pronouncements telegraphed an open border policy to Mexico and its southern neighbors.  Administration spokesmen engage in Orwellian double speak, a frequent dialect in this White House, claiming the borders are more secure than ever.  Really?  So the most secure border ever has resulted in a wave of illegal immigrants that have so overwhelmed the system more border control agents are attending to basic human needs than providing security?

Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel once said no good crisis should ever go to waste. By that he meant a crisis gives the president the opportunity to take actions he might not otherwise be able to take.  That is why the Obama Administration has allowed the current immigration crisis to occur.  It was predictable and encouraged and designed to help the president achieve his personal political goal of letting tens of thousands of new immigrants - who will become dependent on the government services his party champions, and ultimately voters for future progressive regimes.

Against the backdrop of this harsh reality Republicans and responsible Democrats in congress must act quickly to change current law allowing those who have crossed the border to be sent back immediately.  The current process is unenforceable, unrealistic and partially to blame for triggering the crisis now unfolding.  Then, steps must be taken - including the deployment of troops - to seal off the nation's southern border.  And finally, congressional leaders must come together to craft a reasonable and enforceable immigration policy going forward.

A nation is not truly a nation if it cannot control its own borders.  The time has come for us to regain control of ours.

Pa. lawmakers pocket $14,364 salary hike since illegal pay raise was repealed

Has it been nine years since the Pennsylvania Legislature repealed its infamous middle-of-the-night pay raise? Guess what? The political elite who populate Harrisburg managed to raise the base salary of state lawmakers by $14,364 since 2005 in a series of "cost-of-living-adjustments." In the end, the permanent political class takes care of its own at the expense of state taxpayers. So go ahead and send those incumbents back to Harrisburg this November so they can continue to pick your pockets.

Gov. Corbett endorsed by Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry

From the Tom Corbett for Governor campaign:
HARRISBURG, PA – Fresh off more positive news regarding Pennsylvania’s improving economy under Governor Tom Corbett’s leadership in Harrisburg, the Corbett-Cawley campaign today announced the endorsement from the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry.  The endorsement comes in the wake of the most recent jobs report showing that Pennsylvania now has 5,078,000 people employed by the private sector – an all-time high.

“We proudly endorse Governor Tom Corbett for re-election because he has made the tough decisions necessary to build a stronger Pennsylvania,” stated Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry President Guy Ciarrocchi.  “Thanks to Governor Tom Corbett’s leadership in Harrisburg, Chester County is rebounding from the recession and from the bad economy that his administration inherited when he took office.  We are now stronger with more people employed in the private sector than at any other point in our state’s history, while our unemployment continues to free-fall.  We are excited to see where our state is headed under four more years of Governor Tom Corbett’s leadership in Harrisburg.”

“I am honored to have the support of the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, which has been a tremendous partner in creating a business-friendly climate here in Pennsylvania that promotes job growth and economic development,” stated Governor Tom Corbett.  “I look forward to working together over the next four years to continue building our pro-business agenda to bring even more jobs to our stronger Pennsylvania.”

The latest jobs report released by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry found that 21,700 private sector jobs were created for the month of May, bringing the total amount of Pennsylvania’s private sector jobs to 5,078,000 – the most in state history.  The unemployment rate also fell for the tenth consecutive month to 5.6 percent – a five-year low.

The improving economy under Governor Tom Corbett has earned him praise from leaders around Pennsylvania, including past Pennsylvania Governors Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker, U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) and others.  Below is a list of statements in response to the most recent positive jobs report.

Ed Rendell NEVER signed a budget on time in his 8 years in Harrisburg and not a peep about it from the fawning media. And all this talk about "budget gimmicks" to avoid a tax increase? Ed Rendell's budgets were built entirely on "budget gimmicks" and he still raised taxes. The liberal bias is getting out of hand in Harrisburg.

Land of the free? Not so much. Americans' sense of freedom drops

From an article by Gram Slattery published in the Christian Science Monitor about the rapid decline in the sense of freedom Americans feel since Barack Obama took office:
This Independence Day, Americans will celebrate the nation’s core values, especially freedom. But according to a new international poll, Americans have become significantly "less satisfied with the freedom to choose what they want to do with their lives."

Seventy-nine percent of US residents are satisfied with their level of freedom, down from 91 percent in 2006, according to the Gallup survey, released Tuesday.

That 12 point drop pushes the US from among the highest in the world in terms of perceived freedom to 36th place, outside the top quartile of the 120 countries sampled, trailing Paraguay, Rwanda, and the autonomous region of Nagarno-Karabakh.

Only 10 nations experienced as sharp a drop as the United States in terms of the satisfaction of citizens with their level of freedom: Egypt, Greece, Italy, Venezuela, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Romania, Yemen, Pakistan, and Spain.
