Republican John Maher continues to pick up endorsements from newspapers across Pennsylvania, including several newspapers that typically endorse Democrats:

Pennsylvania Extends Absentee Ballot Deadline Because of Sandy Disruptions

Because of the disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy, which forced the closing of many state and county offices, Pennsylvania has extended the deadline to submit absentee ballots for the Nov. 6 General Election by two days.

The Pennsylvania Department of State, which overseas elections, released the following statement:
Gov. Tom Corbett ordered the deadline for county election offices to receive applications for absentee ballots to be extended, on a county-by-county basis, depending on whether the county courthouse was closed for business any day this week due to Hurricane Sandy.

The deadline for voters to have absentee ballot applications to county election offices is October 30.  However, that deadline will be extended one day for each day a voter’s county courthouse is closed this week, but no later than Friday, November 2, by 5 p.m.

“I urge voters to mail applications immediately, and county election officials to process these applications and get absentee ballots to voters as quickly as possible,” said Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele, whose department oversees elections.  Aichele noted voters may mail absentee ballot applications to their county election office, or deliver the application in person.

Voters who become physically disabled or ill, or who learn they must be absent from your municipality of residence because of your business, duties, or occupation, can file for an emergency absentee ballot, by completing and filing with the Court of Common Pleas in their county an emergency absentee ballot application.
Information on filing absentee ballot applications is available at www.votespa.com.

28 U.S. newspapers switch endorsements to Mitt Romney in 2012

Stop the Presses! This is a huge story.

As of today, 28 newspapers in 20 states that endorsed Barack Obama in 2008 have now endorsed Mitt Romney for President in 2012.

Newspapers do not switch back-and-forth between parties lightly and considering that the vast majority of American newspapers lean left, it's remarkable that so many are backing Romney.

The best example of the seismic shift is the Des Moines Register, which endorsed nine consecutive Democratic presidential candidates going back to 1972. The Des Moines Register is urging Iowa residents to elect Mitt Romney on Nov. 6.

Wisconsin newspaper backs Mitt Romney

A ringing endorsement of Mitt Romney by a Wisconsin newspaper, the Green Bay Press-Gazette:
How long can Obama blame his predecessor for the current financial woes without taking any responsibility for some of the economic duress and gridlock? At some point, the problems a president inherits become his problems if he hasn’t been able to solve them. At that point, then, we need someone else in the White House who can solve them. We believe that person is Mitt Romney.

Newspapers that endorsed Obama in '08 switch to Romney

If you're keeping score on the number of newspaper endorsements the presidential candidates have received so far, Romney is ahead, a big surprise considering that most newspapers are liberal and traditionally endorse Democrats.

From The Hartford Courant:
According to Editor & Publisher, the longtime bible of the newspaper business, the tally as of Saturday was 112 for Republican Mitt Romney and 84 for President Obama. That list didn't include papers from Sunday, when many delivered their endorsements, but it suggested a shift from 2008, when E&P's final tally showed daily newspapers -- which historically have skewed Republican -- endorsing Obama over Republican John McCain by a better than 3-2 margin, 296 to 180.

The decision to turn an incumbent president out of office is never one to be undertaken lightly by voters. But good intentions, repeated promises and lofty rhetoric are no substitute for sound economics and a foreign policy grounded in realism and strength. It is time once again for change in Washington, and we strongly believe that Mitt Romney offers the right combination of experience, vision, leadership and moral grounding to reinvigorate the nation’s economy, bring a measure of control to the ocean of debt threatening to engulf us, and lay out a foreign policy that has the clarity and force needed to deter aggression while promoting international stability.

Stunning newspaper endorsement for Mitt Romney

The Des Moines Register, the largest newspaper in Iowa, and a paper that has not endorsed a Republican presidential candidate in more than 40 years, is backing Mitt Romney for president! After endorsing Democratic candidates in nine consecutive presidential elections, including Barack Obama in 2008, the newspaper says Romney is the right person who can "correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America."

From the endorsement editorial:
The former governor and business executive has a strong record of achievement in both the private and the public sectors. He was an accomplished governor in a liberal state. He founded and ran a successful business that turned around failing companies. He successfully managed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Romney has made rebuilding the economy his No. 1 campaign priority — and rightly so.

Dallas Morning News Endorses Romney For President

From an editorial in the Dallas Morning News endorsing Mitt Romney:
Romney has shown an ability to lead, from turning around the deficit-ridden 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics to his term as Massachusetts governor. His plans for tax and entitlement reform are encouraging, shifting the focus from government first to freeing the private sector to innovate. Voters should demand more specifics, but at the heart of his plans — especially on reforming a teetering Medicare system — is an instinct to rely on competition over regulation to drive growth.

Obama himself once said that if he didn’t repair the economy "in three years, this would be a one-term proposition." The facts show it’s time for a principled, pragmatic leader who can get Washington working again.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

The "Charge of the Light Brigade" took place on Oct. 25, 1854, during the Crimean War as an English brigade of 600 men charged the Russian army in the Battle of Balaclava (Ukraine),  suffering heavy losses. The event is memorialized by this famous poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

The Charge Of The Light Brigade

by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Written 1854

Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd & thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke,
Shatter'd & sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

Dems Begin the Post-Obama Blame Game

It won't be official until the polls close on Nov. 6, but the Obama campaign is already maneuvering to place the blame for Barack Obama's anticipated loss.

Despite outspending GOP challenger Mitt Romney, unleashing the Democratic Party's vaunted voter fraud machine and having the mainstream media running interference for him, Obama is headed for a historic defeat at the hands of American voters, a la Jimmy Carter.

Somebody has to take the fall for the Democratic Party debacle. And no, Obama can't blame this on George W. Bush.

Among the leading scapegoats: Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Pennsylvania in play as Philadelphia suburbs turn against Obama

More 'Replace Obamacare' Billboards Go Up In Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Commercial Action Network (PACAN), an advocacy group for small businesses, is adding three more "Replace Obamacare" billboards across Pennsylvania on the eve of the Nov. 6 election.

From a PACAN posting on the group's website
PACAN is placing 3 more "Replace Obamacare" billboards along I-95 and I-76 in the Philadelphia market.  "We'll now be impressing 2 million people a week by the end of October, but we'd like to double that with digital bulletins along Pennsylvania's major highways," said Matt Balazik, "We need the public's help to share this reminder that Obamacare is bad policy that incentivizes limiting access and reducing quality."

In addition to the over 1,000 "Replace Obamacare" bumper stickers ordered by the public in the past 2 weeks, several hundred anti-voter-fraud yard signs have been ordered and we expect to see them at polling places around the commonwealth.
PACAN is also offering a cash reward for information about potential voter fraud in Pennsylvania.

"Mitt Romney is the man who can lead the nation out of its lingering economic doldrums and restore faith in the United States. A successful executive in the public and private sector, Romney is a committed capitalist who understands that the nation's prosperity is driven by free enterprise, not government. Under President Barack Obama's liberal and inconsistent leadership, the country has limped along, barely a step ahead of another recession."

Greek Food Festival Opens Today in Berks County

The largest ethnic food festival in Berks County returns for its 42nd year Friday through Sunday at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Reading, Pa.

Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the Greek Food Bazaar to enjoy authentic Greek food and pastry and live music and dancing.

The food is prepared and cooked on the premises by church members using family recipes handed down through generations. All food items are available to eat-in in the church social hall or take-out.

The most popular dish is Athenian-style chicken, which comes in a platter with a side of Pastitsio or rice pilaf, Greek-style string beans, a Greek salad, roll and butter for $12. You can substitute Plaki (fresh fish fillet baked with vegetables, herbs and wine) or Souvlaki (chunks of marinated pork) on the platter meal.

There are also a la carte items such Gyro (marinated beef and lamb slices) and Souvlaki (pork shis-ke-bob) sandwiches; Calamari (squid) cooked in tomatoes and wine; Moussaka (eggplant casserole); Arni Psito (roast lamb); and Pastitsio (layered Greek pasta, seasoned with chopped beef topped with béechamel.

A variety of imported Greek wines and spirits, including Ouzo, an anise-flavored liqueur, will also be served. And be sure to try Mythos, a popular beer imported from Greece.

While enjoying a meal in the main dining hall, visitors will be treated to Greek and American music by Stavros & Maria, a brother-sister duo who are also church members.

Kefi, the church's youth dance group, will perform traditional Greek dances throughout the weekend wearing colorful costumes.

After a hearty meal, there's plenty to see and do on the church grounds.

An Agora (Greek market) offers packaged Greek foods and prepared dishes to go. The Kafenio (Greek coffee house) features fresh-brewed Greek-style coffee, rice pudding and pastries in a relaxed atmosphere.

Visitors can also shop for original artwork, gold jewelry and items imported from Greece in various gift rooms.

Festival-goers can also view one of the largest collections of Byzantine iconography in the United States. Guided tours of the church interior are provided every the hour.

A popular stop for all visitors is the pastry room, where you can pick between popular treats like Baklava (almonds, butter, and honey layered in flaky pastry), Teelikta (walnuts, butter and honey rolled in flaky pastry); Kourabiethes (butter cookies topped with powdered sugar), Koulourakia (Greek twisted butter cookie) and Galaktobouriko (a filo pastry filled with custard and moistened with honey syrup). If you can’t decide, take a sampler box home with you.

Another Greek delicacy is Loukoumathes (puffed honey balls), a warm dough pastry topped with honey, cinnamon and chopped nuts.

Bazaar hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission and parking are free. The event is held rain or shine.

Additional parking is available across the street at Berks Catholic High School.

The church is located at 1001 E. Wyomissing Blvd., about one mile from Business Route 222 South (also known as Lancaster Avenue). Turn onto Hancock Boulevard between the two car dealerships and stay on the road until you see the church on the right.

For more information, call the church office at 610-374-7511 or visit the church's website, www.stsconstantinehelen.org

Conservative Newspaper Endorses Liberal Bob Casey!

What a back-handed endorsement of ultra-liberal Sen. Bob Casey Jr. by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which is probably the most conservative newspaper in Pennsylvania: "Despite our policy differences with Casey, we prefer the Democrat we know to the Republican of convenience."

Apparently, the newspaper doesn't trust businessman Tom Smith because he spent most of his life as a registered Democrat before he switched to the Republican Party and defeated several better-known candidates for the right to challenge Casey.

Pretty harsh words against Smith. Wasn't Ronald Reagan a Democrat before he saw the light?

The race still comes down to far-left Casey, who has rubber-stamped the failed Obama agenda over the past four years or a "conservative Democrat" who is pushing fiscal restraint, smaller government and accountability.

The Tribune-Review editorial says Casey is a nice guy who has treated Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative idol, with respect, but the bottom line is that Tom Smith's platform is a lot closer to Toomey's than it is to Bob Casey's.

Sending Mr. Smith to Washington as part of a Republican majority in the Senate would go a long way to repairing the damage Barack Obama has done over the past four years.
