Columnist: Obama is no friend to oil workers

Gil Spencer on how Barack Obama played Philadelphia-area union workers for fools:
But there is some irony here.

At their union headquarters in Marcus Hook there are quite a few “Obama-Biden” campaign signs. When it comes to doing the bidding of big labor, the Obama Administration can generally be counted upon. But this administration has been no friend at all to the oil business or the people who labor in it.

It has made its fondness for “clean” and “renewable” energies well-known. It has poured billions of taxpayer dollars into politically connected green-energy companies that have failed rather spectacularly. This administration’s disdain for carbon-based fuels is just as well known.

So it was almost comical that in response to the announced refinery closures, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey would ask Energy Secretary Steven Chu to get “personally involved in the issue of reductions in Northeast refining activity.”

Ridiculous because Chu is on record advocating not only higher gasoline prices, but much higher gasoline prices; prices at the levels of Europe, which today are over $10 a gallon in some countries. Chu understands well that it is only if U.S. gas prices get (and stay) crazy high will the nation’s move to a “green” economy become more feasible.
