'This bill is one of the largest tax increases ever on the citizens of Pennsylvania'

"This bill is one of the largest tax increases ever on the citizens of Pennsylvania, and the fact of the matter is that we do not need a tax increase to have a responsible budget."

-- Republican Whip Mike Turzai, R-Allegheny, after the House voted 102-96 Wednesday to raise taxes by $1 billion. The vote broke down to 100 Democrats and 1 Republican supporting higher taxes, with 94 Republicans and 2 Democrats opposing the tax hikes.

Democrats voted to increase taxes on cigarettes by 25 cents a pack and force Pennsylvania businesses to pay a higher capital stock and franchise tax.

The vote came on Day 99 of the state's budget impasse.
